These are some of the questions we get asked most frequently.

Is there a difference between box colors from the store verses professional color from a stylist?

Absolutely there is!!  To modify the color of hair, whether to be lighter or darker, requires an equation.  What color are you starting with & what is the desired color?  A formula needs to be prepared while being sensitive to the condition of the hair.   A box cannot process that information.  Example:  We have all seen her, the woman with the “orange hair & dark roots”.  She uses a box color.  The standard box formula was not created to lighten her individual color hair.  What about her friend with the “cotton candy hair”?  She uses box color too.  The standard box formula was not created for her individual hair color either & much worse; she puts the color ALL over her hair every time.  Damaging it over & over.  We have also seen the “did you color your hair for Halloween” look.  Not all skin tones are complimented by severe dark colors.  Hair in poor condition mixed with a box of brown hair color, often will result in black.  A stylist can blend dark colors together to compliment your tones & avoid too dark a shade during processing.  The trained stylist can create individual color formulas, to give you beautiful color while protecting the health of your hair.

My toenail is thick, brittle and chalky. Why?

There is a Fungus Among Us!! Sounds like you have a case of onychomycosis , toe/finger nail fungus. It is a common dermatological condition, most often occurring with age or injury. Left undiagnosed and untreated, it can progress and cause complete destruction of the nail. One available treatment is the oral prescription "Lamisil" These antifungal pills can be the best chance of curing a severe fungal nail infection. Always consult your doctor. A less invasive and natural alternative treatment is the use of Vick’s Vaporub.

Applying Vicks Vaporub to fungus-infected toenails can clear up the notoriously hard-to-treat condition. Regular pedicures can also dramaticlly improve the health of your feet!

Do you want me to tell you if I don’t like it?

Please do!!  I don’t know a single stylist that pleases every client every time!  If there is something you want changed, communication is the key.  A consultation on color or cuts is always helpful.  Don’t be afraid to say what you really want from your service.  By discussing it you will not only give your stylist more ideas to be creative with, but you may also find that certain ideas my not be possible with your particular hair type.  Your stylist can’t make changes if they are unaware you're unhappy.

Did you go to school for this?

Yes, with student loans to prove it!  The field of Cosmetology has a range of requirements throughout the United States.  In Oregon you need to invest 1,450 hours of school & pass a series of practical exams to receive a letter of completion.  Beauty schools are independently owned; therefore the price per course is ever rising. You then need to pass a State Board Health Licensing exam to receive your license to practice. Your license then is renewed for a fee to the board every 1 to 2 years. (Depending on the type of license.)  There are more requirements in Oregon to cut someone’s hair than to prepare someone’s food in a public restaurant, interesting!

Gratuity, to tip or not to tip?

Personal preference!!  I believe a tip is just that, a “tip”.  It is very common in my industry, however I appreciate it & believe it is deserved instead of expected.  Additional gratuity included in your service payment conveys to me, a compliment of my work,  a gesture of being well served while in my company.  I also am a consumer out there in the world.  When I tip in a restaurant, it’s according to service, quality & treatment.  When I tip a massage therapist it’s a reflection of the time & energy they spend taking care of me in a personal way.  When I tip a tattoo artist, its appreciation for their skill, art & ability to make a needle going 90mph not feel so bad!  When I tip the coffee girl sometimes its just all the cash I have left on me, no rhyme nor reason.  Besides, I honestly believe what we give with a good heart, always comes back to us!!
